What we’re exposed to on a daily basis can work for us or against us. Hand washing may seem basic, but the adverse health effects that tag along with the chemicals in mainstream hand soaps are anything but basic, especially when you consider frequency of exposure. A good non toxic hand soap is easy to find and will be gentle enough for even the most sensitive of skin.
How often do you wash your hands throughout the day? As a stay at home Mom, it’s continual, I might as well be planted in front of the sink all day!

Hand Washing 101
Hand Washing Tips
Hand washing seems self explanatory, but how many Moms know how easy it is to get sidetracked after changing a diaper or filling the car with gas?
How about after sneezing, taking out the garbage, treating a wound, preparing food, touching pets or pet food?
These are just some of the times that can get overlooked in the busyness of life.
I’ve stood by strangers in a public restroom and thought, do you really need to take all that time to wash your hands? After reviewing the CDC’s recommendations, I’m thinking that maybe I need to step it up and sing the Happy Birthday song as I wash my hands and teach my kids to do the same!
I want to reduce our sick days this year and thorough hand washing plays a vital role in stopping the spread of germs.
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or an air dryer.
I will say that I’m not a big fan of using an air dryer in public restrooms because they can spread bacteria. If paper towels are not available, you’re better off letting your hands air dry or using a child’s wet wipe than using an air dryer in my opinion.
Why choose hand washing over hand sanitizer
Soap and water is the best antidote to the spread of germs, but in those situations where soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer. Look for hand sanitizer with an alcohol content of at least 60%.

This was the first hand soap that I found that was natural and actually worked. I started using this almost 10 years ago. This is a foaming hand soap. I love that they offer glass bottles now. This foaming hand soap comes with a reusable glass bottle and 1 foaming hand soap tablet. You just add water and the tablet to the glass bottle and you have a lemony hand soap! To start off you would purchase the starter set which is $15+ (depends on exactly what you get, how much you get and if you Subscribe and Save) and then once you have the reusable bottle you are getting hand soap for around $2.50 per bottle!
I love the sleek glass bottle that comes with the kit from both a sustainability standpoint, but also that it just looks nice on the counter. I love the foaming aspect too. The pump didn’t get clogged and I feel like soaps tend to last longer when they are foamy versus just liquid. Anyone else? The whole idea of making it again with just a tablet is brilliant!

This gel hand soap is both nourishing and great for sensitive skin. I love the minimal clean ingredients and that there is a refill option. It is pretty pricey overall, that would be my one dislike. It is fragrance free, so keep that in mind. I know some people prefer a scent.
I love that the hand soap from the concentrate is a more budget friendly option overall. You buy the Branch Basic’s concentrate and then use that to make all their cleaning products. One of them is their hand soap. The hand soap is a great option for those with sensitive skin, as it’s made with only a handful of clean ingredients and its fragrance free.

This is definitely a more luxurious hand soap purchase! I love everything about this hand soap, except the price. This is a great all around hand soap. It gets the job done with clean ingredients and it is budget friendly too! I love that they offer scents, but also a fragrance free option too. It comes in a plastic pump bottle, which I’m not as big a fan of. I wish it was glass, but you could just get their refill soap and refill it in your own soap dispenser. The formula itself feels very nourishing on the skin which I love!

I really loved this hand soap! This is a newer product for Ursa Major and it’s really good. It’s not stripping of the skin or drying. I found my skin really loved it! It smells very invigorating and refreshing. The bottle is ok, I prefer glass and a little cleaner looking. They don’t have refills either, which I wish they did.

I discovered these through my sister and really liked them! They are a more budget friendly option and easy to get through Amazon. I like the simple clean ingredients and the option to have refills and an unscented version. I got Mint Lavender, and it’s a pleasant scent- not too overwhelming. The bottles aren’t as chic looking, but if you have small kids it might be nice to have a non glass option. The overall formula is great! It’s not overly nourishing but not drying either.
