Let’s talk about some great home remedies for swollen feet that can help to stop the discomfort and swelling quickly.

Over the years I’ve used a number of methods to help soothe my feet and I’ve found some great ones that work. My feet can swell when it’s hot, I’ve been standing or walking for too long or after a flight.

Swollen feet are uncomfortable and unsightly so I have a number of methods that I use at home to help reduce puffiness and improve circulation in my feet. Here are some of my favorites that I have used over the years.

Home Remedies for Swollen Feet That Work!

If you have time then one of my go-to remedies for swollen feet is a relaxing Epsom salt soak.

Whenever my feet feel puffy and tired, I fill a basin with warm water and add about ½ cup of Epsom salt, letting it dissolve completely. Then, I soak my feet for 15–20 minutes so that the product can draw out any excess fluid and ease that discomfort.

The warmth of the water helps improve circulation, whilst the Epsom salt reduces inflammation so that my feet feel relaxed and lighter.

It’s such a simple and cheap effective remedy and works really well.

You can use plain Epsom salt but I often use one which has lavender in it as well so that I can relax and unwind at home before bed.

What Causes Swollen Feet and How to Treat Them Naturally

Swollen feet can be caused by poor circulation, being overweight, too much heat, standing all day (or sitting for too long), pregnancy and foot injuries. Fluid tends to pool in your feet and ankles causing the puffy look and discomfort.

The easiest way to tackle this, apart from dealing with the root causes of the problem is to elevate your feet above your heart so allow the excess fluid to drain away.

You can do this with a few pillows but I’ve invested in a leg elevation pillow which I put on the couch or bed and use for half an hour at a time in the evening.

Elevating my feet whilst I’m watching TV or reading is really easy to do and doesn’t interfere with my day and works wonders. Just get into the habit and you should hopefully start to see some real changes.

Best Natural Remedies for Swollen Feet Relief

If you are looking for a natural remedy then you could start drinking dandelion tea to help.

Dandelion is a natural diuretic, meaning it helps the body flush out excess water and reduces swelling.

All you need to do is steep a teaspoon of dried dandelion leaves in hot water for about 10 minutes, then sip on it slowly.

A cup in the morning or afternoon can make a difference.

I have to say this isn’t my favourite remedy because I’m not a lover of herbal teas but if you are then it is work trying.

How to Reduce Swelling in Feet at Home With An Ice Compress

As well as the usual swelling in my legs I also get tendonitis in one foot which makes the problem worse at times. So I’ve stated using a cold compress to help.

You can use a few ice cubes wrapped in a thin tea towel to press against the swelling for 10-15 minutes but I’ve found an even better solution which is my ice slippers.

I keep them in the freezer so they are lovely and cold and then put them on my feet whenever I have a problem. The cold constricts the blood vessels, reduces the inflammation and helps to take down the swelling fast.

This remedy is especially helpful after a long day of standing or walking or for when it is really hot. The relief of using these ice slippers is heavenly! The only downside is that in the winter they are harder to use as the last thing you want is cold feet.

Using Essential Oils To Reduce Foot Swelling

When I’m think of home remedies for swollen feet I’ve realised I’m also a big fan of essential oils.

Whenever my feet feel heavy and puffy, I take a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil, mix it with a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil, and massage it into my feet using circular motions.

This helps stimulate circulation, reduces fluid buildup, and gives me a nice soothing, cooling sensation. I usually do this before bed or after a warm foot soak, and it instantly makes my feet feel lighter and more relaxed.

It’s such a simple yet effective way to relieve swelling right at home! Just make sure that you check whether the essential oils you are using are suitable for your problem. Many may not be suitable for pregnancy for example so it is worth double checking before you try using them.

Soothing Feet with Natural Supplements

Supplements can help with swollen feet and in particular you want to look at magnesium to try and help.

Magnesium deficiency is sometimes behind fluid retention so taking a magnesium supplement daily can make a difference.

Magnesium doesn’t just help with swelling but it can also assist with relaxation and better sleep.

If like me you forget to take supplements regularly then buy some magnesium oil and spray it on your feet and ankles to get relief. Just note that you need to let it dry a little before lying in bed as it can get on the sheets.

I also found an added benefit from magnesium oil is that it signficantly reduced any leg cramps that I sometimes got during the night. Anything that stops that horrendous pain is a winner in my books.

Herbal Remedies for Swollen Feet That Are Worth a Try

Another herbal remedy that some people use is parsley tea. This is because the tea is anti-inflammatory and so reduces swelling.

Just brew fresh parsley in hot water for about 10 minutes, then strain and sip it. One or two cups throughout the day are supposed to help flush out excess fluid.

Even though I’m mentioning this remedy it isn’t something I personally use because I can’t stand the taste.

Simple Lifestyle Changes To Help The Problem

One simple lifestyle change I made to prevent swollen feet is cutting back on salt.

I realized that eating too much sodium can cause my body to retain excess water, which leads to swollen feet.

Now, I make an effort to cook more at home and use fresh herbs and spices to season my food instead of relying on processed salts. I also pay attention to food labels when buying packaged items to avoid hidden sodium.

Reducing salt intake has helped me feel less bloated overall, and my feet don’t swell as much as they used to. It’s a small adjustment that’s made a big difference in how I feel day-to-day!

DIY Remedies for Swollen Feet

This next remedy isn’t one that I have tried myself but supposedly apple cider vinegar wraps can help with swollen feet.

Apple cider vinegar is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and it helps to draw out excess fluid from the body.

To create a wrap, mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, then soak a clean cloth in the solution. Wrap the cloth around your feet and leave it on for about 15–20 minutes.

The cooling sensation is supposed to be soothing, and the vinegar helps to reduce swelling over time.

Eating The Right Foods

Finally last but not least if you want to help reduce swollen feet try eating more potassium rich foods like bananas and avacados.

Potassium helps balance the sodium levels in the body, which in turn helps prevent water retention and swelling.

I try and add foods like these into my diet by adding sliced banana to my morning oatmeal or eating avocado with a salad or toast.

As I like the taste it isn’t too hard a dietary change to make but if you aren’t a fan stick with my other suggestions.

Which Are My Favorite Solutions?

So I have given you 10 options but I of course have my favourite home remedies for swollen feet. Personally if I see my feet swelling I try and use these four methods first:

  • Epsom Salt Bath
  • Using a Leg Elevation Pillow
  • My Ice Slippers
  • Spraying Magnesium on My Legs

Of course everyone is different so try my suggestions and see which ones work best for you.
