What are the colors of the wires on a Honeywell 3 port valve? ›

The blue wire is the Neutral, N. The green/yellow wire is the Earth wire, E. The white wire is connected to the wire from the room thermostat which calls for heating (radiators or underfloor). The grey wire is used to drive the valve to the Water Off position, in which only the heating port A is open; it closes port B.

The yellow wires power the zone valve. Once the thermostat calls and the valve opens it closes an end switch (connected to the red leads) which calls in the aquastat relay.

Attach the red wire to the R terminal (Call for heating and/or cooling). Attach the green wire to the G terminal (Fan). Attach the white wire to the W terminal (Heat). Attach the yellow wire to the Y terminal (AC).

Yellow is the most common color for cooling wires, but Blue is also used in some systems. The cooling wire connects the thermostat to a compressor.

The orange thermostat wire connects to your heat pump if you have one. It connects your thermostat to your outdoor condenser to reverse valve operations from hot to cold. The orange wire connects to terminal O on your thermostat. The orange wire only applies to homeowners who have an air-source heat pump.

Here is the industry standard color code for thermostat wires used for most systems: The W wire is connected to your heating system. If your thermostat controls your heat, you will have a white wire. The Y wire is yellow and connects to your air conditioning compressor. The G wire is green and connects to the fan.

Red: Hot Wire

Like black electrical wires, red wires are also hot or live wires. Red can also be the connecting wire between two smoke detectors that are hardwired. Also, if your circuit box is wired for 240 volts instead of 120 volts, you may even see both red and black wires.

Zone valves are designed to close gently while opposing the force of the water flow in the pipe. Most are spring loaded. If the valve is installed backwards, the flow of water catches the closure ball, overrides the spring, the valve snaps shut, and the water slams to a halt.

3 Port Valve Operation

Electrically, the valve has 5 wires: Green/Yellow, Earth – connected to the metal body of the valve. Blue, Neutral – internally connected to the neutral side of the motor. White, Live in 1 – Activates the motor inside the valve to select either AB (both) or A (heating)

The protective ground is green or green with yellow stripe. The neutral is white, the hot (live or active) single phase wires are black , and red in the case of a second active. Three-phase lines are red, black, and blue.
